The gospel of the olfactory failure! Malaysian researchers create a "virtual sense of smell"

<

This month, the American Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers announced a new research project: virtual smell. Stimulate your olfactory nerves with a tool like a traditional electronic kit that lets you “produce” the sense of smell.

The project is still very imperfect. To stimulate the sense of smell, the researchers need to stick the electrodes inside the volunteer's nasal cavity and connect them directly to the nerves.

Kasun Karunanayaka, a senior researcher at the Imagineering Institute in Malaysia, and Adrian Cheok, a Ph.D. student, wanted to create a “multi-layer experience network”.

These researchers connected dozens of electrodes and tubes into the nasal cavity of volunteers, and by changing the intensity and frequency of the signals, they got some interesting results. Volunteers often say they smell the smell or the smell of chemicals. Some volunteers also said that they smelled fruit, sweet, and the taste of mint and wood.

However, the biggest question is, can we "feel" the smell without inserting a large electrode in the nose? For volunteers, this experiment is very uncomfortable. Karunanayaka also admitted: "A lot of people will never come again after they have participated in it once, because it is hard to bear."

Although it is not known whether the electrode can be removed in the future, the idea is still very cool. For example, for those who have a sense of smell, this technique may help them to renew the news to the smell.
