The Vienna General Hospital of Austria recently announced that the first successful completion of auditory brainstem implantation in the Vienna Medical University.
The patient underwent surgery for a 23-year-old patient. Usually, people with hearing impairments can be improved by installing a cochlear implant as long as the deafness is caused by a defect in the inner ear function, but the auditory nerve is not destroyed. However, this patient was completely deaf because the auditory nerve was destroyed by the tumor, and the inner ear was electrically stimulated by the cochlear implant.
Therefore, Austrian medical experts performed auditory brainstem implantation. Unlike cochlear implant surgery, auditory brainstem implantation bypasses the inner ear and auditory nerve, implants the electrode on the surface of the brain stem, directly contacts the auditory nucleus, and activates the brain stem nerve by current, thereby repairing the patient's hearing. .
The Vienna General Hospital issued a statement saying that this is an interdisciplinary operation, co-sponsored by the director of neurosurgery at the Vienna Medical University and the director of the ear, nose and throat. The operation went very well and the patient was discharged after a week. But the statement also pointed out that the doctors will continue to conduct current stimulation tests on patients to optimize the position of the brain stem electrode of the patient, and perform a series of training and adjustments on the patient to gradually correct their hearing.
