Genes related to domestication of corn

<

The domestication of modern corn from its wild species is one of the landmark events in the history of human agriculture. The researchers believe that the major difference between the morphology of corn and terpenoids is due to the relatively small number of genetic changes. Now, the researchers found that the barren stalkl mutant first described in 1931 exists in a region of the genomic region that is strongly associated with modern maize development. A cloning study of the barren stalkl mutant showed that it encodes a protein that is essential for the formation of all branches of corn, including the ear of corn. Of the many barren stalkl alleles present in the genus, only one was selected throughout the modern maize self-crossing process, providing reliable evidence that the gene was selected for agronomic purposes.
